AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Important NOTES for students applying to RHS Awards and Scholarships

  • The mark used for non-diploma subjects will be the teacher’s final mark
  • The mark used for diploma subjects will be the final blended mark sent out by Alberta Education.
  • If a student is exempt from writing a Diploma exam, for any reason, their mark will be adjusted for awards purposes based on the class average change on the Diploma exam. 
  • For the purposes of awards, students are not allowed to use a mark from a final exam rewrite or from repeating a course.
  • The student must be a current graduate of Rimbey High School and attending graduation.
  • The awards committee will be made up of the Principal, the High School Assistant Principal, Counselors, and other members of the faculty.
  • If no suitable candidate is found, the awards committee could decide not to give the award.
  • Any student who completes 5 academic 30 level courses, including English 30-1, at Rimbey Junior Senior High School is eligible for Valedictorian.
  • To qualify for any award that requires a specific course, the course must be taken and completed at R.J.S.H.S.

**The individual scholarship sponsors will determine who and when you receive any scholarships that you apply for and these will not be presented at our Graduation Ceremony.

A.T.A. EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Teachers of Wolf Creek Local #3

Amount: $400.00

Conditions: Must be a graduate of R.H.S, based on top mark. Going on in the education field preferred.

AGRICULTURAL SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Rimbey Agricultural Society

Amount: $250.00

Conditions: A graduate of R.H.S who is attending a post-secondary institution taking agriculture or  agriculture related subjects. There will be no ties for this award.

ALL ROUND STUDENT AWARD

Sponsor: Rimbey Kinsmen Club

Amount: $300.00

Conditions: This award is in recognition of all-round excellence for a student graduating from the Rimbey High School. This student must set a good example and be a model for others in behavior, attitude and work habits. Must be a student “looked up to” and “well thought of” by peers as well as teachers.  Participation in community, athletics and student association may be used. All years of high school are to be used. There will be no ties for this award.

BENTLEY SEED CLEANING PLANT SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Bentley Seed Cleaning Cooperative Association (County of Lacombe)

Amount: Interest earned by endowment fund of $31,792.70 to be divided equally among the qualifying students.

Conditions: Must be a graduate or attending a post-secondary program with a minimum duration of one year.  Preference given to an agriculture or related field. Must obtain an overall average of at least 70% in Grade 12. Must be a resident of the district for a minimum of three years.  When two or more students meet the above criteria, preference shall be given to the student receiving the least scholarship funding.

DALE EWANCHUK C.T.S. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Lone Wolf Heavy Duty Repairs, and RJHS Staff (Wolf Creek)

Conditions: Student must show a high interest in Woods and be quite good at it.

The student will have gained a greater sense of the value of education through the woodshop. Student must have a high work ethic and a sense of humor

Preference is given to students whose attendance at school was likely enhanced by opportunities in the wood shop.Strong preference is given to students who go on to apprentice in carpentry.

EVA TONA BANDONI ESTATE SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Eva Tona Bandoni Estate (Wolf Creek)

Amount: Based on the yearly accumulation of interest earned on a $20,000.00 principle donation.

Conditions: The receiving student must qualify from a financial standpoint.  The student must be entering a recognized institution, which deals primarily with the academic upgrading of the student, whether technologically (i.e. NAIT) or theoretically (i.e. U of A).

The selection committee will look at the following characteristics in the applicant's:

Sociability, responsibility, diligence, commitment to success, and financial need. Financial need is the most important factor.

EVERGREEN CO-OP SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Evergreen Co-operative Association

Amount: A maximum of $3000.00 will be awarded to individuals throughout the Evergreen  Co-operative Association’s trading area. The number of recipients and dollar value of the scholarships will be determined annually by the Member Relations Committee.

Conditions:

1. A Evergreen Co-op staff member or immediate family member  OR

2. Members of the Evergreen Co-op.

Students must be attending a post-secondary program in the fall.

Applicants will be required to demonstrate Co-op involvement as well as involvement in sports, community activities & volunteer activities will be considered. The type and length of the  program they are entering, as well as the cost of the program, and any other pertinent information needs to be included in the application.

Forms  must be dropped off at Evergreen CO-OP.  Deadline on or before the close of business of  the third Friday of August. You must include your Social Insurance number with your application.  Your application will be shredded after the awards committee meets.

 

FEDERATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Sponsor: Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops Ltd.

Amount: 4 awards of $1000.00

Conditions: Children of members of the Gull Lake Deer Creek Gas Co-op (GLDC) for at least 1 full year.  (Award not presented at graduation ceremony.)

Full time enrolment to first year of a degree, diploma or apprenticeship program at any eligible accredited post secondary institution in Alberta (list on application form). Preference will be given to those applicants entering a field which applies to the Natural Gas Industry (Power Engineering, Millwrights, Gas Utility Operators, Machinists, Heavy Equipment Technician, Steamfitter and Pipefitter).

Minimum academic standing of 75% in  core subjects.

Essay (250 word minimum) discussing yourself, goals and why the Federation should grant them an award 2 letters of reference

FEMALE ATHLETIC EXTRACURRICULAR AWARD

Sponsor: ECKRIM Agencies

Amount: $200.00

Conditions: This award will be determined by the coaches.  Athletic ability, participation, leadership, and sportsmanship will be considered.  Focus will be on school related  extracurricular sports.

Conditions: Awarded to the student who achieves the highest average in grades 11 & 12.

GREATEST IMPROVEMENT AWARD

Sponsor: Staff of Rimbey Medical Clinic

Amount: $300.00

Conditions: Must be a Rimbey High School graduate who has attended Grades 10, 11, and 12 at Rimbey High School and who has improved the most from grade 10 to 12.  This award is based on marks, outlook and work habits.

GRUMBACH AGRICULTURAL FIELD SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: S. Grumbach Memorial Fund & Mr. Ed Grumbach     

Amount: $200.00

Conditions: The student must be going into Mechanics or Parts, with the intent of working in an Agricultural business or the student can be entering any Post Secondary Agricultural field. They must enroll and be attending in order to receive the funding.

HALVAR C. JONSON SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: H.C. Jonson Scholarship Fund (Mrs. M. Jonson)      (Wolf Creek)

Amount: $1000.00

Conditions: Deadline: September 1st 

Eligibility: High school student must be registered in a post secondary education institution in Alberta, leading to a teaching certificate. (If you are taking a year off before attending a post-secondary institution, you may apply for the year you will be attending college or university.)

How to Apply:

2. Print out the application form and complete it. Submit prior to September 1st. (End of June is recommended)

3. Attach a letter of reference from a community member who is not a relative 

4. Attach a copy of your high school transcript 

5. Attach a copy of a Certificate of Admission from the post-secondary institution you will be attending. 

6. You must provide your Social Insurance Number with your application. Your information will be shredded after the awards committee meets.

7. Mail the documents to the address on the application form.

 

HEALTH CARE SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: $500.00

Conditions: Must be enrolled in a medical program or a related field of medicine.  Priority goes to those in need.  Also average or above average marks are required.

JOHN DALE PARRY CA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: John Dale Parry Memorial Fund

Conditions: For a graduating student of Rimbey High School who has demonstrated consistent superior academic achievement throughout their high school career, which has contributed to the quality of life in the Rimbey area through community service; and who intends to enter a post-secondary institution following graduation. Preference will be given to those with a stated desire to enter a post-secondary business program with a major in accounting.

LINDBERG HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP 

Sponsor: The Lindberg Family (Wolfcreek)

Amount: Approx. $500.00 (based on interest)

Conditions: This award is the yearly accumulation of interest that is earned on a $15,000.00 base donation by Mr.  & Mrs. Wilton Lindberg. It is given to the student who has achieved the second highest average in grade 12 and who is enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution.  Averages will be calculated in English 30 and four of the following: Math 30, Math 31, Social Studies 30, Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30, and French 30  The recognized institutions must deal primarily with the academic upgrading of the student, whether technologically (i.e. NAIT) or theoretically (i.e. U of A). If the second highest student does not qualify for the award, then the third highest is chosen, and so on. Ties broken the same as for Valedictorian.

Conditions: Must have attended the Rimbey High School for 2 or more years. Based on average to above average marks. Leadership qualities and maintaining a positive or above average work ethic are also the basis.

They must be handed in to the Principal prior to the 3rd Friday in June. Applicants must be enrolled and accepted into a post-secondary institution.

RAP/CTS SCHOLARSHIP 

Amount: up to 500 scholarships of $1000

Program specific criteria:

o RAP - complete 250 hours of on-the-job training while attending high school (before graduation). Apprentice on-the-job hours must be updated with AIT by August 1, 2019

o CTS - complete an apprenticeship pathway while attending high school (the “Record of Courses Completed” must be submitted to the local AIT office). The form must be assessed by August 1, 2019.

o An academic component has been added as a final step to selecting recipients. Apprentices are ranked based on their high school marks in English, Math and Sciences.

Career and Technology students must also have a copy of their 'CTS Course Completion Record', provided by a supervising teacher, on file with Apprenticeship and Industry Training. It must be signed by a teacher, principal, journeyperson instructor and local Apprenticeship and Industry Training office staff.

The top 500 RAP/CTS students in Alberta will receive RAP/CTS scholarships.

· Students are only eligible to receive this scholarship in the year they graduate.

This scholarship program is one that you don’t even have to apply to be eligible! All you need to do is consent and provide your Social Insurance Number (SIN) – it’s that easy!

Even if you have already provided your consent, it’s best to go in and double-check that all the information needed is there so you don’t miss out on potential financial support. Repsol Oil & Gas Canada Inc. Academic Achievement Scholarship 

Amount: $500.00

Repsol Oil & Gas Canada Inc. is proud to invest in the communities in which we live and work. Repsol's primary community focus is on promoting education within their operating area. The $500.00 Academic Achievement Scholarship is to be awarded to a grade 12 graduating student based on academic achievement, from students who will be furthering their education in engineering, trades or sciences. Preference will be given first to a student who is looking to a career in oil and gas, and secondly to a student who is involved in peer leadership and/or extracurricular involvement. 

How to Apply: You do NOT need to apply for this award/scholarship. The Awards Committee will select a winner from students who will be furthering their education in engineering, trades or sciences. 

 

Repsol Oil & Gas Canada Inc. Further Education Scholarship 

Amount: $1000.00

Repsol Oil & Gas Canada Inc. is proud to invest in the communities in which we live and work. Repsol's primary community focus is on promoting education within their operating area. The $1000.00 scholarship is for a grade 12 graduating student who will be furthering their education. 

How to Apply:

Students interested in this scholarship must write a cover letter outlining which high school they attended, a little about themselves and their academic plans for  the future prior to June 15. Repsol will have a panel of judges select the recipient by late June. 

 

SKEELS FAMILY AGRICULTURE AWARD

Sponsor: Dan and Karen Skeels & Family    

Amount: $500.00

Conditions: This Award was developed for the purpose of promoting and supporting  agriculture in our community. The recipient of this award must have been active on the farm and/or active in an Agricultural organization and a person of good character.

The recipient must be pursuing a career in agriculture, preferably a livelihood in, or the study of livestock.  They may have been involved in 4-H livestock and financial need will be considered. If a suitable candidate is not available, the award will not be given out.

Conditions: For graduating students with an interest in pursuing communications or fine arts training. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate an active commitment to the fine arts, and/or communications activities.

Conditions: The highest average of English 30 and four of Science 30, Chemistry 30, Biology 30,Physics 30, Social Studies 30, Math 30, and Math 31. If there is a tie, the next highest subject is chosen; and so on.  Must take all of their Grade 12 at Rimbey High.

VOLUNTEERISM SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Rimbey Christian Reformed Church (Mr Mark Buwalda - Clerk of Council) 

Amount $250.00

Conditions: The student must be accepted into any post-secondary institution for the upcoming year. 

How to Apply: You apply for this award/scholarship using the Self Nomination form linked hereThe student must also attach a letter to the Awards Committee outlining community and/or school volunteerism during their high school years at RJSHS.You must include your Social Insurance Number with your letter.  Your letter will be shredded after the awards committee meets.You must also provide two letters of reference from individuals who have overseen your volunteerism. Your Self Nomination form and letters must be delivered  to the Principal prior to June 15th to be considered.

 

WILL HOAR MATH/SCIENCE AWARD

Sponsor: Mr. Don Dewar

Amount: $400.00

Conditions: If tied, each gets the amount.  Graduate receiving the highest average in one math and two sciences OR one science and two maths.  Must be grade 12 subjects.

WOLF CREEK SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsor: Wolf Creek Regional Division #72 (Wolf Creek)

Amount: Two awards of $300 each              

Conditions: This is a split between two graduates who do not qualify for a Rutherford Scholarship and are enrolled in post-secondary education. Contributions to school affairs, personal attributes and community involvement will be considered.

WOLF CREEK CTS SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: $300.00              

Conditions: Student must have received a substantial number of credits in CTS, RAP, and or Green certificate.  The student must enroll in post-secondary studies including apprenticeship within 12 months of graduating.

Conditions: Top mark. Must obtain 5 credits or more.  Job Prep 101 is not included in the average; one recipient only.

WPW INC. SCHOLARSHIP  

Sponsor: WPW Inc.

Amount: $250.00

Conditions: This scholarship is to be given to a student from Rimbey that has been in a RAP program in high school for Welding, Pipefitting or Heavy Duty Mechanics. These are the apprenticeships that WPW offer to their employees. If more than one student fits this criteria, the student who is determined to benefit the most from this scholarship shall be the recipient.
