David Martin Appointed Assistant Principal of Ponoka Elementary School

Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of David Martin as the new Assistant Principal of Ponoka Elementary School, beginning in the 2025/2026 school year.

Martin brings a wide-ranging background in education as a classroom teacher, school leader, division-level curriculum coordinator, and university instructor. Most recently, he has been teaching pre-service educators at Red Deer Polytechnic. Before that, Martin served as Assistant Principal at both St. Marguerite School and St. Joseph High School in Red Deer. He has also held the role of Division Lead Teacher for Math and Science, where he provided professional development and instructional support for educators from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 across Red Deer Catholic.

“David’s strong instructional leadership and extensive background in both school and system-level roles make him a tremendous asset to the Ponoka Elementary team,” said Sonja Dykslag, Assistant Superintendent of People Services. “His passion for numeracy, mentorship, and inclusive practice reflects the values we hold dear at Wolf Creek. We are excited to welcome him to our division.”

Martin holds a Master of Mathematics for Teachers from the University of Waterloo and is known for his passion for mathematics instruction and leadership. Beyond the classroom, he is committed to deepening his understanding of First Nations culture and history. He has worked closely with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to respectfully and responsively incorporate Indigenous perspectives into his practice.

“I’m incredibly honoured to join Ponoka Elementary School and become part of a vibrant and supportive school community,” said Martin. “I look forward to working alongside staff, students, and families to create a space where all learners feel valued, challenged, and inspired.”
