ÉJSMS School Council recognized by provincial peers for focus on students and community

The school council for École James S. McCormick School (ÉJSMS) has received provincial recognition for its impact on students, staff, and the wider Lacombe community.
ÉJSMS has been recognized with the Alberta School Councils’ Association’s (ASCA) School Council Award of Merit, which celebrates effective school council practices that have a measurable impact on supporting student learning and school improvement at the school, district, or provincial level.
“We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering dedication of our ÉJSMS School Council team,” said ÉJSMS Principal Melissa Rogers. “Their commitment to supporting our students, staff, and the wider Lacombe community is both inspiring and impactful.”
The group has worked relentlessly to fundraise for much-needed new playgrounds at ÉJSMS.
“Their efforts are beginning to gain traction, and we’re excited about the possibilities ahead. In particular, they are advocating for inclusive play structures, recognizing the importance of creating spaces where all children, including those in wheelchairs, can play, explore, and thrive,” said Rogers.
Beyond infrastructure, the ÉJSMS School Council also recognizes the importance of cultural enrichment. Their investment in bringing the Red Deer Indigenous Dance Troupe to the school was a meaningful step in helping students understand what it means to live, dance, and play on Treaty 6 territory. The council was also instrumental in organizing Cabane à Sucre, a French carnival held at the school in February.
“We are humbled and proud to work alongside such a committed group of individuals,” said Rogers. “Their vision, compassion, and drive to do what’s best for our school truly make a difference.”
