WCPS Drivers Excel at Local School Bus Road-e-o Event

Six Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) drivers recently put their skills to the test at the Local School Bus Road-e-o, held May 24 at St. Joseph High School in Red Deer.
The annual event brings together divisions and transportation providers from across central Alberta—including WCPS, Chinook’s Edge School Division, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, and Prairie Bus Lines—to collaborate on a fun and competitive challenge course designed to highlight the precision, professionalism, and safety focus of school bus drivers.
The day kicked off with a written exam designed to assess participants’ knowledge of road rules and school bus safety procedures. Afterward, drivers had the chance to walk the course and prepare for the hands-on driving challenges ahead.
The competition course was anything but simple. Drivers were tested on a wide range of skills, including:
-
Simulated student pick-ups
-
Parallel parking a full-size bus
-
Precision curb parking between other vehicles
-
Backing down a narrow lane
-
Navigating an offset alley and a narrowing alley
-
Rail crossing procedures
-
Left and right turns with pinpoint accuracy
-
Stopping exactly at a designated mark
-
Driving a perfectly straight line
“It is a great way to really challenge drivers’ skills in a safe space,” said WCPS Transportation Manager, Betty Clark. “We brought six competitors this year, and I’m proud to share that three of them have qualified for the provincial competition. I am exceptionally proud of our team moving forward.”
In addition to the competitors, WCPS also contributed seven judges to help run and support the event, further demonstrating the division’s strong commitment to school transportation safety and excellence.
The Provincial School Bus Road-e-o will take place June 7 at the Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) site in Nisku. Events are scheduled to begin around 9:30 a.m., and spectators are welcome to attend and cheer on the competitors.
